Key highlights
Helping build drought resilience
Diversity in pastures is increasingly recognised by graziers as an important contributor to drought resilience and farm profitability. On the New South Wales north coast, the benefits include:
- key method to increase soil carbon levels and therefore rainfall infiltration capacity and drought resilience,
- filling the winter and early spring feed gaps,
- improving forage quality and
- an important tool in the management of the spreading issue of pasture dieback.
Local interest and need
There is no reference guide on multi species pastures for the sub-tropical north coast, so graziers often base decisions on unsuitable temperate examples or what seed produce stores have available. NSW Department of Primary Industries and North Coast Local Land Services no longer have the resources available to conduct extension in this area on the north coast. This multi species pastures guide provides producers with a reference for the sub-tropical coastal region, including objective guidance based on field trials and the experiences of a range of producers on the New South Wales north coast.
Since launching the guide on 7 April 2025, there has been a significant increase in traffic to the .
