Rationale
Registered Nurses in an Advanced Practice role are required to have the knowledge and skills to use extended and expanded skills and knowledge to make critical, clinical decisions that impact on positive patient outcomes.
This course provides the foundational knowledge to enable the advanced practice nurse to work within their scope of practice and within legislative requirements, and Australian Nursing and Midwifery board guidelines and standards to achieve quality patient outcomes.
Synopsis
This course facilitates the student to apply advanced nursing competency domains in decision making to ensure safe and accountable practice. In this course the student will examine the clinical reasoning required of the advanced practice nurse and the application of best practice principles to achieve quality outcomes. Students will examine the legislation, professional guidelines and standards, and local governance which impacts their scope of practice.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Conceptualise and plan advanced nursing practice by applying critical reasoning using a clinical decision-making framework;
- Formulate health care decisions that are legally and professionally justifiable;
- Coordinate and lead practice to collaborate and negotiate quality patient/client health outcomes with other members of the health care team;
- Adhere to the appropriate legislative practice in the state/territory of health care context;
- Adapt practice to apply risk assessment and mitigation strategies within complex organisations to achieve optimum safe practice.

Attendance requirements:
There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students’ responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Engagement in online discussion forums forms part of the directed study component of this course. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item, and must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for the Competency Assessment item. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must submit all assessment items, achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course and pass the Competency Assessment. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course and pass the competency assignment. -

The due date for an electronically submitted assessment is the date by which a student must electronically submit the assignment irrespective of holidays.
