Rationale

An important outcome of post-graduate level study is that learners should be able to design and execute independent projects that consolidate, build upon and/or apply the knowledge and skills developed through their program of study in their workplace. This course, taken at, or towards the end of the program, is part of a 'capstone experience' that enables students to synthesise the knowledge and skills developed in earlier courses of their program into an approved research project focused on a key aspect of their interest or specialisation. This course is the initial stage of a two course project.

Synopsis

This is the first of two courses that contribute towards the Nursing Masters Project. With guidance from a member of academic staff as supervisor, the student will undertake an independent research project which relates to their overall program of study. The student will gain all necessary approvals for undertaking the research including ethics approval and undertake data collection and analysis project.

Important assessment information

1. Attendance requirements:
   
   There are no attendance requirements for this course however, the student it is the student鈥檚 responsibility to participate in all activities scheduled for them including meetings with their supervisor. It is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
   
   
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   
   To complete the progress report satisfactorily, students must have achieved the required minimum standards in relation to the objectives of the course by satisfactorily completing the requirements negotiated with the Supervisor and approved by the Examiner.
   
   
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
   
   Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)
   
   
4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   
   To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must have achieved the required minimum standards in relation to the objectives of the course by satisfactorily completing the requirements negotiated with the Supervisor and approved by the Examiner in this course and successfully complete HSC8080.
   
   
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   
   Students will be awarded the grade of IIP (Incomplete - in progress) at the end of this course provided they demonstrate, via the Progress Report, that they have achieved the required minimum standards in relation to the objectives of the course by satisfactorily completing the requirements negotiated with the Supervisor and approved by the Examiner. When the independent project has been assessed in its entirety, the grade of IIP will be changed to the final grade.
   
   
6. Examination information:
   
   There is no examination in this course.
   
   
7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
   
   Deferred and Supplementary examinations will be held in accordance with the Assessment Procedure .

Assessment Notes

1. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner.
   
   
2. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This should be sent to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request from the Examiner to do so.
   
   
3. The examiner may, in consultation with the Program Coordinator, grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
   
   
4. The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile.
   
   
5. The Progress Report, shall include satisfactory completion of the requirements negotiated with the Supervisor and approved by the Examiner to the minimum required standards in relation to the objectives of the course.
   
   
6. APA style is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use APA ) style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The APA style to be used is defined by the USQ Library's referencing guide.
