Rationale

Today’s professional musician works increasingly across diverse local and global contexts. A knowledge of the social, cultural and ethical issues inherent in music enables students to critically engage with music from a broad range of perspectives. This course aims to develop students’ critical thinking skills, cultural capability, and written communication, with an emphasis on how these skills and knowledge apply to professional practice in music.

Synopsis

This course is designed to introduce students to a range of critical perspectives through which to view music, and invites students to identify and critically examine and problematize the assumptions which underpin our knowledge of the role of music in culture and society. A range of perspectives will be explored, with an emphasis on those which provide alternative views to the dominant paradigm of Western art music. Students will research and formally articulate critical and evidenced knowledges of various aspects of music within culture and society.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Analyse a variety of critical perspectives through which to view music and its role in culture and society (including alternative views to the dominant paradigm of Western art music) to develop critical thinking and written communication skills;examine ideas about music from critical perspectives to develop cultural capability;
  2. Reflect on the social, cultural and ethical issues present in narratives in and about music including its production, performance and consumption to situate their own professional practice within these contexts.

    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.

    To be assured of receiving a passing grade, a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
