Rationale

The outstanding life differentials between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians peoples remains at an unacceptable level. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMaC) have mandated that Indigenous Health be incorporated in all Nursing Programs to support and inform the future nursing workforce of the many complexities that have informed Indigenous health today. Further, this Course aims to inform the student on Culturally Safe practice when working in partnership with Indigenous peoples.

Synopsis

An understanding of the social and cultural determinants of health and the impacts of historical and contemporary practice and their influence on the social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations Australians is essential in providing cultural safe health care with these populations. This Course utilises cultural safety as the model to contemporary health care delivery in Australia. It emphasises the contemporary nurse as a foundational member of the health partnership and who is necessary in enhancing First Nations peoples social and emotional wellbeing. It values the role of First Nations Australians in self-determining processes and leadership in health and research.

Objectives

Throughout the course and on completion students should be able to:

  1. Examine both historical and contemporary policies that have been imposed on First Nations Australians as a tool of administration. The student will engage in critiquing both historical and contemporary government policies and their implementation and the impacts they have upon the current health status of First Nations peoples;
  2. Identify the principles of Primary Health Care as underpinned by the Declaration of Alma Ata. Further the student will align these principles to the historical development and current operating philosophy of the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services within Australia;
  3. Examine Social and Emotional Wellbeing as defined by Indigenous health practitioners. The student will engage in Indigenous knowledges that underpin positive and holistic Social and Emotional Wellbeing for First Nations peoples;
  4. Have an understanding of self:
    by examining your values, prejudices, cultural beliefs and behaviours that affect the delivery of culturally safe nursing and healthcare for First Nations peoples. Students will identify their own potential prejudices, attitudes, beliefs, stereotypes and behaviours that could affect their nursing practice when caring for First Nation Australians.

    It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities and study all material provided to them, or required to be accessed by them, to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.   2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks. (Depending upon the requirements in Statement 4 below, students may not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to receive a passing grade in this course.)

    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
