Rationale

Innovation in Art, Architecture, New Media & Design is the investigation of how the term ‘artist’ is not solely confined to fine art, but also how individuals in a variety of fields are reshaping what it means to be creative practitioners. Students in this class will have the opportunity to extend their understanding of the study of art by researching experimental ideas (topics) that are grounded within 20th Century history. These are the foundation upon which our contemporary societies are reshaped continually through private and public creativity.

Synopsis

This course looks at recent trends in visual art where artists and their practices have become hybridised disciplines expanding from conventional outcomes (such as painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, ceramics, object making and printmaking) into new and exciting areas of artistic practice within architecture, new media and design. This course will encourage students to achieve a greater understanding and awareness of the broad spectrum of artistic practices that are inherent within not only visual art, but across a multitude of artistic areas such as design, architecture and new media. This is undertaken through investigating how contemporary society has become a playground for various practitioners to explore new outcomes within private and public spaces changing the way societies and cultures experience their built worlds.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Examine and discuss concepts associated with artists across multiple disciplines and how their practices represent contemporary hybridised artistic expression;
  2. Research and analyse historical and contemporary practices within art, architecture, new media and design;
  3. Work independently to develop and communicate ideas in writing that contribute to an emerging personal philosophy based on research, analysis and interpretation within all assignments;
