Rationale
Professional Placement 1 provides students with their first opportunity to gain insight into authentic professional practice in a sport and exercise setting. Students will undertake the first 20 hours of 140 hours of exercise science scope professional placement at an approved placement facility. The 140 hours is undertaken over three placement courses during the program of study. The acquisition of a competent level of knowledge and skills relevant to the level of study completed is required. The ability to apply knowledge and skills in an ethically responsible and risk managed manner is required.
Synopsis
This course predominantly provides observational learning regarding the nature of authentic professional experience in a sport and exercise context. The course also provides the opportunity to observe practical applications of sport and exercise skills. The course outlines opportunities to value add to professional skills developed during the course and as a practitioner. The importance of evidence based research and the ability to draw together knowledge and skills from different discipline areas is outlined. Effective time management skills and work related documentation processes to ensure successful completion of the course are provided during the program of study.
Professional Placement 1 involves a mandatory 4-hour practicum preparation module on campus for all students. Students within 150km radius of Ipswich Campus are required to attend in person while all others outside the 150km radius of Ipswich Campus will be attending via zoom.

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Describe the knowledge and skills an exercise professional applies in a sport and exercise setting.
- Compile relevant professional practice documentation.
- Reflect on knowledge and skills acquired through placement activities.
- Display professional behaviour and communicate appropriately (verbally and nonverbally) when interacting with supervisors, colleagues and clients.
- Show awareness of ESSA code of conduct and respective year-level scope of practice.

Attendance requirements:
It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. All students must be available to undertake 20hrs of placement and all placement requirements. All Toowoomba on-campus students are required to attend a 4-hour practical class (simulation session) at the Ipswich campus. The remaining 16 hours of placement will be completed at an approved placement site in the Toowoomba area. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete the Practical Class, a student must attend and receive 100% of the marks (mark 1 out of 1) for this item. To satisfactory complete the Practicum Logbook and Reflective Assessment, a student must submit and receive 100% of the marks (mark 1 out of 1) for each item. To satisfactorily complete the Evaluation Form, a student must submit and receive 50% of the marks (mark 2 out of 4) for this item. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must complete 20 hours of professional placement, submit the Practicum Logbook and Reflective Assessment and receive 100% of the marks (mark 1 out of 1) for each item, and submit the Evaluation Form and receive 50% of the marks (mark 2 out of 4) for this item. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
As Ungraded Pass is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of UP. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade. -

Risk Management:
This course may involve active participation in physical activity. The course examiner should be informed of any medical conditions which may be influenced by physical involvement. Students need to wear the USQ Sport and Exercise placement shirt and clothing and athletic shoes appropriate to the conditions. In some cases practical sessions will be run in an outdoor environment. Appropriate consideration should be given to issues associated with sun safety, including items such as headwear, sunscreen, and sunglasses. There are no other risks beyond the ordinary. -
Professional Placement:
- Students must complete the pre-placement requirements of this course outlined in the Sport and Exercise Professional Placement Handbook before undertaking professional placement.
- The 20 hours of professional experience must be gained in areas of sport and exercise performance, fitness or health and wellbeing, including workplace health, hospital or clinical services and in sport and exercise research. A combination of experiences in a variety of settings and with different populations is expected during the program of study. Four hours of placement are undertaken in the form of a simulation session on-campus, and the remaining 16 hours are completed at an approved internal or external placement site.
- Students residing within a 50km radius of either the USQ Ipswich or USQ Toowoomba campus will be allocated a placement in the respective area. All students residing further than 50km away from either USQ campus will be allocated a placement in their local area. If a suitable placement is not available in the student’s local area, the student is expected to travel and attend placement where a suitable placement site has been established.
- The supervisors for the professional practice will be required to meet certain qualification and/or related experience guidelines. Students will complete a log-book and other nominated requirements and supervisors will be required to approve or counter-sign the log-book and complete a report for the student’s completed professional practice.
- Students must have successfully completed the entire professional placement requirements at the end of their allocated placement block to meet the requirements of this course. This will include the completion of appropriate documentation as well as the submission of relevant reports . This will be monitored to ensure compliance.
- Students must be available for a prescribed period of time to undertake a placement in an approved site to complete the requirements of this course. Students are required to be available to attend placement as scheduled by the supervisor, in line with the site’s usual hours of operation. Generally, the professional placement will be undertaken in a single block time over two or three weeks unless there are extenuating circumstances. All required reports are to be submitted within two weeks of the last day of completing the professional placement.
- All professional placements are organised by the Professional Experience Placement Team and Placement Coordinator and are subject to approval. Students must not contact sites seeking professional placement. No payment may be received for the professional placement. Professional placement will be organised around other course requirements in the program - and it cannot be used as a basis for seeking assessment extensions.
- Only students enrolled in the BSES or BSEH program who complete the majority of their studies at the 51²è¹Ý can enrol in Professional Placement 1.
To cover all eventualities it will be expected that all students will obtain a suitability card or equivalent in each state when commencing the BSES or BSEH program and before any professional placement. State law in Queensland (Australia) requires that all adults working/undertaking professional experience/researching with children under the age of 18, in the state of Queensland are required to possess a current suitability card (Blue Card).
